This year’s Arara comes from Nataliá Moreira Brito at Toca da Jaguara in Mantiqueira de Minas. It’s boozy and creamy, with peanut butter up front, Grand Marnier behind it and forest fruits underneath. We’ve had Pretty Nuts in different versions over the years, and this harvest is one of the more intense ones.

Pretty Nuts comes from Nataliá Moreira Brito, one of our key partners in Brazil and someone we’ve worked with across several coffees over the years. This lot comes from Toca da Jaguara, her 30-hectare farm in Mantiqueira de Minas, where Arara has been particularly successful. Nataliá works across farming, cupping and exporting, and experiments with different fermentation and drying techniques to produce profiles that can be quite different from what you might expect from Brazil. This one is boozy, creamy and intense, with peanut butter, Grand Marnier and forest fruits.
Origin
Sitio Beija Flor farm is in Mantiqueira de Minas, at 1150 masl. Fifteen hectares are planted with coffee, while the rest of the land is protected or being regenerated. Nataliá works on the farm alongside her father, Paulo, and also runs Jaguara, her exporting company.
Varietal
Arara, which has performed particularly well at Toca da Jaguara. Its success on the farm has led Nataliá and her family to begin planting other varieties with longer maturation periods, including Paraíso and Geisha. In Pretty Nuts, we find peanut butter, forest fruits and a boozy, Grand Marnier-like note.
Processing
Extended fermentation natural. The cherries go through a longer fermentation before being dried with the fruit intact. Natalia works with different fermentation and drying techniques across her coffees, producing a wide range of profiles from the farm.
Intervention level
Medium. The extended fermentation adds a deliberate step beyond a traditional natural process, while the coffee is still dried whole with the fruit intact. This harvest is particularly intense, but Pretty Nuts keeps the boozy, creamy character we know it for.
